1. Blocked or Iced-Over Defrost Drain

Ask any appliance technician what they see most, and the defrost drain comes up first — by a wide margin. Every refrigerator with an automatic defrost system runs a heating element every 8 to 12 hours to melt ice off the evaporator coils. That meltwater flows down through a small drain hole, travels through a tube, and lands in the pan under the unit where it evaporates. When that hole clogs — with a strawberry stem, a glob of frozen sauce, or plain mineral scale — water backs up until it overflows inside the fridge compartment, pooling under the vegetable drawer or running out from beneath the door.
A secondary sign is a faint sour smell coming from the lower section of the fridge. Stagnant water in a warm drain tube grows mold fast.

2. Worn Door Gasket

The rubber gasket around the door edge does one job: keep warm outside air from getting in. When it fails — through cracking, deforming, or just losing its grip from years of use — warm humid air seeps past it constantly. That air hits the cold interior surfaces and drops its moisture as condensation. With enough of it, water drips down the inner walls, soaks the bottom of the compartment, and eventually finds its way onto the floor.

3. Cracked or Full Drain Pan

The drain pan — a shallow plastic tray tucked under the fridge behind the kickplate — holds defrost runoff while the compressor’s heat evaporates it. Under normal operating conditions it never overflows, and most people live their entire lives without thinking about it. Two things go wrong with drain pans: they crack, or in exceptionally humid environments they fill faster than the compressor can empty them.
Florida homeowners know this well. A Sarasota summer with 90% outdoor humidity means the pan can hold standing water for days even when every component is working correctly.

4. Faulty Water Inlet Valve

On any refrigerator with an ice maker or water dispenser, a solenoid-operated inlet valve sits at the back of the unit where the supply line connects. It opens when the ice maker calls for water and closes when the cycle ends. Valves fail in two ways: the body cracks from freeze-thaw stress or a hard water hit, or the solenoid weakens and the valve no longer closes fully. Either way, you get a slow drip or a steady trickle from the back of the unit.
A secondary tell is inconsistent ice production — fewer cubes than usual, or the tray filling unevenly — because the valve is no longer delivering a consistent water pressure.

5. Damaged Water Supply Line

The supply line — usually braided stainless steel on newer installs, or clear plastic on older ones — is the hose running from the wall shutoff to the back of the fridge. Refrigerators get pushed back against the wall, the hose gets kinked. Or the fridge gets moved for a kitchen renovation and the line develops a hairline crack at the bend. Refrigerator leaking water from the back is the classic presentation.
Plastic lines are more vulnerable than braided steel — if yours is clear plastic tubing and more than five years old, inspect it closely even without an active leak.

6. Water Filter Fit Problems

Refrigerators with built-in water filtration rely on a tight compression seal between the filter cartridge and the housing. If the filter isn’t seated correctly — which happens more often after a routine swap than people expect — water seeps past the o-ring and drips into the compartment or runs down behind the crisper drawers. Using an off-brand filter that’s a few millimeters shorter than spec is another common trigger; the housing can’t compress the seal completely.

7. Refrigerator Sitting Off-Level

Refrigerators are designed to drain rearward. The drain pan sits toward the back, the compressor heat is concentrated there, and the drain tube exits at an angle that relies on gravity pulling water backward. When the unit tilts forward — after a floor replacement, after wheels roll on soft vinyl, or simply from years of the front legs sinking slightly — water from the defrost cycle pools at the front of the drain pan instead. It overflows at the front, and you get a puddle that makes no obvious sense because every component is functional.

8. Humidity-Driven Condensation

This one surprises people because there’s nothing actually broken. In coastal and subtropical regions — Southwest Florida included — outdoor relative humidity regularly stays above 85% through summer. Every time the fridge door opens, a fresh load of that moisture-saturated air enters the compartment. The cold surfaces condense it immediately. Do that 30 times a day, and the volume of condensation exceeds what the drain system was sized for.
You might also see this on older units with slightly weakened door seals that wouldn’t fail the dollar bill test but still let in a thin, continuous stream of outside air.
